About The Interactive Art Installation "You Are An Open Book"

We live in a world of quick labels and surface impressions. But everyone is more than what they appear to be.

This piece invites you to consider your own hidden sides, the parts of you that people don’t see, or don’t ask about.

When I was asked to make a self-portrait, I couldn’t fit all of me in one drawing. I couldn’t fit all of me on one page. So I started drawing each part of me and realized I’m an open book.

So are each of us. In my book, each page became a version of me. Together, they formed these pages printed large enough to walk into.

We hide parts of ourselves, sometimes out of fear, sometimes out of habit.

You Are an Open Book is a portrait of visibility and vulnerability. An invitation to remember that we are all more than what fits on one page.

Most people know me as one thing: an artist, a technologist, a mom, a business owner, a wife, a designer, a friend, a future astronaut. But I’m not just “one page.”

This installation asks: What would happen if we stopped editing ourselves?

Each page of this book reveals a side of me that’s often hidden, simplified, or overlooked.

When you make it to the last page, you find a place where this book hands you the pen.

Draw a part of yourself most people never get to meet. The soft self, the silly self, the alternate draft self.

The one that deserves a page.

After adding your unique drawing, don’t forget to write your name + Insta handle, so your unpublished self can join the anthology of all our other selves.

You Are an Open Book isn’t just a giant illustrated memoir. It’s a conversation. A collaboration. A moment of mutual recognition between artist and audience.

At the end of the installation, visitors are invited to do something radical in its simplicity: pick up a pen and draw a version of themselves most people don’t get to see. Not the polished version. Not the LinkedIn headline. But the soft one. The silly one. The over-it, under-caffeinated, deeply dreaming one. The self that’s usually offstage.

That final page? It’s left blank on purpose. Because this book doesn’t end with the artist. It ends with you.

Throughout the week at CONTEXT Art Miami, hundreds of visitors sat down, took a deep breath, and drew. The result was a living, evolving final page — a collective portrait of vulnerability, play, curiosity, and identity.

It became the emotional heart of the installation. And now, in the limited edition print run, that audience-created page lives on, printed and bound into a book that captures not just Alejandra’s many selves, but the courage of everyone who contributed their own.

Because art isn’t just something you look at. Sometimes, it hands you the pen and says,

“Your turn.”
